The Sustainable Aquarium Botanical Trade Project
In the heart of Indonesia’s peat-swamp forests, nature and community are deeply connected. The Sustainable Aquarium Botanical Trade Project was created to strengthen that bond, turning ethical trade into a tool for habitat protection and community empowerment.

A New Approach to Aquarium Botanicals
Leaves, seed pods, bark, and other “aquarium botanicals” are prized by hobbyists who recreate natural blackwater environments. But behind botanicals often lie forests, living ecosystems that must stay healthy for collection to continue.
Our project builds a sustainable supply chain where trained local collectors harvest these natural materials responsibly and selectively, ensuring that every leaf or pod taken can naturally regenerate. Nothing is stripped bare; the forest remains functional and alive.
Empowering Local Communities
In many peat-forest regions, communities face a difficult choice between short-term income from destructive activities and long-term ecological health. By training and supporting collectors, we offer an alternative source of income that depends directly on the forest staying healthy.
When fish hunters/collectors earn a fair wage through sustainable harvesting, conservation becomes part of their daily life, not an external rule, but a shared interest. Protecting the forest also means securing the future of communities that depend on it. A damaged habitat often means the end of both biodiversity and traditional livelihoods.

A Cycle of Conservation
This approach creates a positive feedback loop:
Healthy habitats produce high-quality botanicals.
Responsible collection brings steady income to local people.
Engaged communities become the strongest defenders of their ecosystems.
By linking income directly to ecosystem health, the project transforms conservation from an imposed rule into a practical, rewarding choice.
Join the Project
We welcome resellers, aquarists, and conservation-minded partners who share our vision of responsible trade. By joining the project, you directly support:
Fair, traceable income for local collectors,
Protection of fragile peat-swamp and blackwater habitats, and
The creation of a transparent model for sustainable botanical sourcing.
Whether you are an aquarium retailer, a botanical supplier, or an individual hobbyist, your involvement can help expand this community-based conservation network. Together, we can ensure that every product sold carries a positive impact for people and for nature.
Parosphromenus Indonesia does not profit from sales, payments go directly to collectors, with only minimal administrative fees when needed. Through transparent trade and community-led stewardship, we aim to demonstrate that caring for the forest and benefiting from it can grow together.
