Saving Indonesia’s Hidden Freshwater Treasures
Deep in Indonesia’s marsh forests and peat swamps live some of the world’s rarest fish species. These quiet waters are home to an incredible biodiversity, but they are disappearing fast. Forests are being cleared, wetlands drained, and waters polluted, leaving these fragile habitats smaller and more fragile every year. If nothing changes, some Indonesian endemic species could vanish forever.
That’s why we’ve chosen to focus our efforts on Parosphromenus species. These fish, often called “liquorice gouramis,” are tiny, brilliantly colored, and found nowhere else on Earth. They are a symbol of the incredible biodiversity of these wetlands and a reminder of how much we stand to lose.
At Parosphromenus Indonesia, we’re working to protect these habitats. Together with local communities, scientists, and partners, we’re:
-
Protecting and restoring habitats so native species can thrive again.
-
Sharing knowledge to help communities care for their wetlands sustainably.
-
Studying and monitoring ecosystems to make every action count.
-
Telling stories that inspire more people to value and protect these hidden worlds.
Our goal is simple: to keep these freshwater treasures alive, not just for today, but for the generations to come.
Join us in protecting the quiet beauty of Indonesia’s wild waters.
