Launch of the GoFundMe Campaign

Parosphromenus Indonesia is a conservation initiative currently in the process of being formally established as a Yayasan (Indonesian nonprofit foundation). The project is dedicated to the in-situ conservation of Parosphromenus species and their blackwater habitats, with a particular focus on peat-swamp forests. As a first step toward making the project legally and operationally viable, we are launching a GoFundMe campaign to support the initial phase of the initiative.

Why a crowdfunding campaign?

To operate legally in Indonesia, collaborate officially with universities and local partners, and apply for conservation grants, the organisation must first be registered as a Yayasan. This process involves upfront legal and administrative costs, as well as the acquisition of basic research permits.

Until this step is completed, it is not possible to:

  • conduct fieldwork in a legal and transparent framework,

  • sign formal partnerships,

  • or apply for national and international conservation funding.

This initial crowdfunding phase is therefore a necessary foundation, not an end in itself.

What the funds will be used for

The funds raised will be used exclusively to cover the minimum requirements needed to start working responsibly and legally in the field:

  • Legal registration of the Yayasan

  • Administrative and research permits

  • Basic field equipment

  • An initial exploratory survey phase in Riau Province (Sumatra)

Any additional funds raised beyond this target will be allocated to early survey and monitoring actions.

Our first focus: Parosphromenus phoenicurus

The first project will focus on Parosphromenus phoenicurus, a species endemic to Riau and currently listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Rather than attempting broad or abstract actions, the approach is intentionally focused and step-by-step:

  • improving knowledge of the species’ real distribution,

  • assessing habitat condition and threats,

  • identifying priority sites,

  • and laying the groundwork for long-term, locally anchored conservation strategies.

How you can help

Supporting this campaign helps make the project legally possible and allows the first concrete steps to take place. Even sharing the campaign contributes to giving visibility to species and habitats that are often overlooked.

This website and our social media channels will be used to share updates, progress, field insights, and challenges as the project develops.
